Don’t forget the skincare basics!
In the world of social media, overwhelming marketing and everyone pushing their “holy grail” skincare product, it’s hard to find what’s right for you and your skin. The best way to achieve your skin goals is to remember the foundation of good skincare and consistently practice the basics.
Double cleanse!
Cleansing is the cornerstone of a better-than-great complexion. Removing makeup, excess oil, dirt and bacteria before bed can contribute to premature aging, dark spots and breakouts. Your skincare can only work properly on well-cleansed skin and without a clean base, your makeup will not have a smooth canvas to work with.
The first cleanse is usually an oil-based cleanser or micellar water, these help deep cleanse your skin by removing grime, dirt, makeup, sunscreen (no abrasive makeup wipes!).
Your second cleanse is the one you’re most familiar with, and by removing surface-level gunk before using your cleanser makes it more effective by being able to penetrate your skin and pores. Choose a cleanser that is gentle and non-drying. For those who have drier skin type, or who have sensitive skin try using milk or cream cleansers. But for those who prefer a foaming type cleanser, or those with oily or combination skin types, pick one that does not strip the skin.
Always follow up with the rest of your skincare routine.
The order you apply your products is crucial
Layering is the key to maximum efficacy: if your skin is primed to absorb your products, they’ll work even better! Here’s all you need to remember: go lightest to thickest! Layer your products from water-based products such as toner/facial mists to serums, then moisturisers and locking all the goodness in with a facial oil if you use one.
AM example:
Cleanser
Facial mist
Serum
Eye cream
Moisturiser
Sunscreen (never skip!)
PM example:
Double cleanse
Toner
Serum
Eye cream
Moisturiser
Face oil
Pat and tap your products in, don’t rub!
The pat and tap technique helps your skin absorb products better, minimises stress on your skin and increases blood flow which flushes out toxins and brings a natural warmth to your cheeks.
Patting is when you apply your product by spreading product all over your hand, and gently pressing your hand over your face and holding for a couple of seconds before pressing to another area of your face (the main areas to press on are cheeks, forehead, chin, and neck). There is only one direction of motion, and it is into your skin.
Tapping is similar, in that it involves the one inward direction of movement, but at a faster speed than patting and with lighter pressure, using mostly only your fingers, rather than your entire hand.
